The 2009 Scientific Programme is in excellent shape.

Airway Symposium

This symposium will run as a continuous theme through the 2nd day of the Congress. Orlando Hung, co-author of “Management of the Difficult and Failed Airway”, is joining us from Canada and several members of the Airway Special Interest Group here in Australia will be sharing their expertise. These include Chris Acott, Keith Greenland and Wim Smithies. Two other international speakers, Andre van Zundert and Friedrich Pühringer will also stimulate the conversation.

Whilst not part of the symposium, the day will start with a rare talk from Archie Brain, inventor of the Laryngeal Mask Airway. He has been enticed from his retirement to visit the ‘Top-End’ and share his thoughts on future developments.

A highlight of the day will be a ‘Case Discussion’ session. Several of our invited speakers will present some interesting patients from their files and we will be asking the audience to share their thoughts on techniques. Arguments with the speakers are encouraged, especially if educational.

The symposium is supported by our sponsors, for whose assistance we are very grateful.

There are Airway Workshops coordinated with the symposium to highlight aspects of the Difficult Airway algorithm, thanks to the efforts of Chris Acott.

Social Programme

The social programme will be a highlight of the Congress, with a great evening planned at Crocosaurus Cove on the Sunday.  Children will have  the opportunity to get up close & personal with Australian wildlife, while delegates and partners enjoy the delicious food and wine on offer. Watch ‘volunteers’ enter the Cage of Death and have a close encounter with some of the very large (over 5m) crocodiles in residence.

The Congress Dinner will be another opportunity to experience the unique cuisine of the NT. We will serve pre-dinner drinks over-looking the new waterfront precinct, before going on to a three course dinner in the Exhibition Hall. Music for the evening will be provided by local favorites “Notorious”, who will have delegates up and dancing the night away.
