Abstract Themes
HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE
This theme explores the international trends in health professional education. It challenges us to present innovations, consider alternate futures and deliberately influence the evolution of clinical education in the undergraduate and postgraduate arenas.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
This theme explores the connectedness between students and community members; and also between medical education programs and the broader communities in which they are situated. It includes the spectrum of public participation from consulting, involving, and collaborating to empowering. It results in the development of culturally appropriate social understandings. Practical examples of how to engage with communities are encouraged.
SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY
Health professional education is challenged to produce graduates with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to understand the health needs of their patients within the context of the global health arena. This theme explores how medical education can contribute to addressing differences in health status that are unnecessary, avoidable and unfair. It also explores how to support our students to develop the skills required to live, work and learn sustain themselves in challenging settings.
CONTINUITY
A recent revolution in medical education to overcome the lack of connection or continuity among different learning experiences in the tertiary hospital setting has gained momentum. Many educational programs have developed longitudinal integrated student experiences. Continuity of care, supervision, placement and education are concepts which will be explored in this theme.
INTER-PROFESSIONAL AUTHENTIC LEARNING
This theme explores how to maximise student learning by situating them as a member of the health care team in authentic clinical contexts. Here students can meaningfully contribute to patient outcomes in symbiosis with the health service. Learning is patientcentred, work-based, and occurs in multi-disciplinary teams.
Presentation Formats
- Oral Papers: It is anticipated that oral papers will be allocated approximately 15 minutes.
- Posters: Will be displayed for the duration of the Conference. Each poster will be allocated 1-metre x 2-metre high space.
- PeArLs: These sessions allow presenters to present a problem or question to a small group of participants. The presenters then “steps back” and allow the small group to brainstorm and share their experiences. These sessions will consist of a 10 minute presentation followed by a 20-minute discussion.
- “How to” workshop will be allocated 90minutes. Workshops should be interactive sessions and authors must should specify in their abstract proposal how this will be achieved.
